Breast Asymmetry
Consultations offered at our four convenient locations in Calhoun, GA, Chattanooga, TN, Ooltewah, TN and Blueridge, GA
Having asymmetrical breasts is a harmless condition, but it can greatly affect a woman’s sense of body confidence and her intimate life. Though it is quite common, it can lead to feelings of self-consciousness, especially for those with severe asymmetry. Many women with this issue aim to cover up their breasts with clothing, often feeling uncomfortable with the idea of wearing something more revealing. These worries are not only burdensome, but they can also make it difficult for a woman to feel good about themselves and their femininity. The correction of asymmetrical breasts may include implants, a breast lift, or a breast reduction, creating long-lasting results that suit a patient’s overall body shape and resemble natural breast tissue.

About Breast Asymmetry
Breast asymmetry is not always noticeable, but it is quite common for women to have some difference in size, shape, or positioning between the breasts. Just like any area of the body, one side is not often exactly the same as the other. Most of the time, asymmetries appear during puberty and resolve near the end of it once hormonal changes have settled. While some women may have had uneven breasts since their teenage years, others may develop it later in life due to various factors that affect the breast tissue. Weight fluctuations, a decrease in estrogen levels, and skin aging in general can lead to one breast sagging more than the other.
Pregnancy, too, is one of the more significant reasons that can alter breast tissue composition during pregnancy itself and permanently thereafter. During pregnancy, the breasts respond to the influx of estrogen by expanding the milk duct tissue into the fatty tissue. They enlarge temporarily, putting stress on the surrounding skin. After breastfeeding, they may experience deflation and sagging.
Though perfect symmetry is impossible to achieve, your SSA surgeon can discuss your expectations for a restored, elevated appearance that combats these biological changes. With breast augmentation to one or both breasts, you can enjoy natural-looking harmony and proportions in your upper body.
Candidates for Breast Surgery
If you are a generally healthy woman between the ages of 18 and 65, you may be a great candidate. Your SSA surgeon will properly evaluate your medical history, current medications, and your conditions to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Surgeons prefer non-smoking patients since their circulatory system is healthier, but they will make accommodations for individuals who smoke if they commit to quitting nicotine for some time before and after their surgery. Finally, you should have realistic expectations; surgery will not create 100% symmetrical results, but it can greatly improve your breast contouring.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation at one of the SSA locations, you will get the chance to discuss your breast concerns with one of our board-certified surgeons. They will be able to provide you with personalized recommendations to help you attain your body-contouring goals. Aside from the procedure itself, they will outline what you need to know to prepare yourself for surgery and the kind of recovery you can expect. Depending on your degree of asymmetry, your surgeon will prescribe an approach that works best for you. If you have any further questions, you can ask them during your consultation, and your surgeon will be happy to provide you with the information you need to make a wise decision.

Procedure Options
Breast Reduction
A breast reduction is a procedure designed to reform the breast mound to a smaller, aesthetically pleasing size. With this surgery, also called a reduction mammoplasty, your surgeon will work to sculpt away fat and skin as well as some glandular tissue. In cases where you like the appearance of the smaller breast, your surgeon can use reduction methods to match the breasts’ contours. For this approach, they will likely need to utilize an anchor or lollipop incision technique. The lollipop incision follows the outline of the areola and goes down toward the inframammary crease, while an anchor incision includes a lollipop incision with an added horizontal incision along the crease itself. Where appropriate, your surgeon may perform liposuction near the armpit to remove fat and promote a more smooth, even curvature of the treated breast. Your surgeon can resize the areolas if you desire, utilizing the latest methods to preserve nipple/areola nerve sensation post-procedure. (2)
Breast Implants
Breast implants can resolve asymmetries in which you would like to volumize the breast that appears more deflated than the other. If you have good skin elasticity, your surgeon will likely be able to augment your breasts in this manner without needing to incorporate breast lift techniques. At SSA, our surgeons offer a variety of implant sizes that will suit your particular body structure. To be more specific, our range of implants includes varying profiles (level of projection from the chest wall) and comes in teardrop or round shapes to modify the breast mound to your exact liking. We offer all-silicone, saline-filled, and highly cohesive implants with both smooth and round textures. Your surgeon can inform you of the subtle differences between each and their recommendations based on your breast tissue present and your goals. They will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of submuscular placement of your implant (under the chest muscle) and subglandular (over the chest muscle) and how each technique can support the implant differently.
Breast Lift
A breast lift (mastopexy) can fix asymmetry issues related to sagging (ptosis) rather than differences in volume. The procedure will restore the breasts to a more elevated placement upon the chest. If both ptosis and uneven breast volumes are present, your SSA surgeon may recommend implant placement alongside a breast lift, a combination procedure called an augmentation mastopexy. For this procedure, your surgeon will first assess how much ptosis has developed in the affected breast and determine the best technique:
- For mild sagging and slight areola reduction, they can use a periareolar mastopexy to remove excess skin.
- For moderate to severe sagging, they may recommend a vertical mastopexy that includes a periareolar and a vertical incision on the lower half of the breast. This may include removing both redundant skin and small amounts of glandular tissue.
- An inverted-T mastopexy is suitable for women with severe ptosis with fatty- rather than dense- breast tissue. The incision is similar to a vertical mastopexy, but there is another incision that follows along the lower breast fold. (3)
Recovery and Results
Your recovery process will depend on which procedure you undergo to address your asymmetry. Typically, after any breast surgery, you can expect to feel sore and exhibit some swelling and bruising in the chest area. You may or may not have temporary surgical drains to help reduce fluid buildup. If you do get drains, your surgeon will only keep them in place for a couple of days before removing them at a checkup appointment. They will be sure to provide you with the tools and medication you need to ease any discomfort you will experience during the first week. Although rest is important, you should try to take short, light walks to encourage blood flow throughout your body to encourage healing.
After 1 to 2 weeks of downtime, you should feel well enough to go back to work and other light activities. You will have to wear a supportive surgical support bra to prevent excess swelling and allow your incisions to mend well without any outside friction or pressure. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you should refrain from strenuous workouts until at least 4 to 6 weeks; at a follow-up appointment, your surgeon will reevaluate you and let you know when it is safe to go back to your gym workouts.
While the results will be noticeable immediately, your breasts will require some time to “relax” and resolve residual swelling. The best course of action is to listen to your surgeon’s advice about cleaning the incisions, changing bandages, and refraining from physical activity until you are ready. After the initial recovery period, you can ask your surgeon about remedies you can use to help fade your scars faster, like scar cream and silicone gel.
