Liposuction for Men
Consultations offered at our four convenient locations in Calhoun, GA, Chattanooga, TN, Ooltewah, TN and Blueridge, GA
Liposuction for men is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits, sculpt body contours, and highlight muscle definition. By targeting and removing areas of body fat, plastic surgeons can create a more refined silhouette for their male patients. It is a safe and effective method to help men reach their body image finish line.
Our experienced surgeons use the very latest liposuction methods, including VASERlipo®. This is a minimally invasive ultrasound-assisted technology that removes fat surrounding muscle groups using amplified sound waves to produce a sculpted, muscular look that can make abs, arms, calves, and even jawlines appear more defined.
As a mainstay of plastic surgery procedures, liposuction has been refined over its more than 40 years of implementation, leading to high patient satisfaction rates. (1) Whether you want to accentuate rock-hard abs or need stubborn fat deposits removed to boost your confidence, liposuction is an effective method for men to achieve their body image goals.

About Liposuction
Metabolisms slow down as men age, and in turn conditions like “beer belly,” “double chins,” “love handles,” and other excess fat sites tend to arise. Liposuction is becoming increasingly common for men who need extra help in their body-sculpting journey. As GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) see more widespread adoption, many men are losing weight at a rapid rate. But even at a healthy weight, stubborn fat deposits still persist and cloak any muscle development that may have formed during weight loss and exercise.
The surgeons at Southern Surgical Arts are continuously adopting the most effective methods of liposuction to provide patients with the most advanced technology for their procedures. This includes VASERlipo® methods. VASER uses ultra-high-frequency soundwaves to dislodge the fatty tissue so it can be removed with medical suction. This allows the patient to recover faster compared to standard liposuction as surrounding tissues are left unaffected and swelling is kept to a minimum. (2)

Liposuction Benefits
Liposuction provides patients with an incredible opportunity to reshape their body to a desired image. Men’s mental health is just as crucial for a happy, healthy life as their physical health, so liposuction procedures that boost confidence and improve quality of life are important for achieving long-term well-being. (3) Some of the other benefits patients experience from liposuction are:
- Pronounced Muscles and a Toned Physique: As liposuction removes fatty tissue from your body, it allows your skin to sit closer to your muscles. This will make the muscles you have developed throughout your body appear more defined while giving your overall physique a tighter, healthier, stronger look.
- Reduction of Abdominal Fat: Most men will target their abdomen for their liposuction procedure, creating a slimmer waistline and a sharper, more attractive Apollo’s belt (the iliac furrows).
- Balanced Body Proportions: As you lose weight, some areas of your body will begin to look smaller than others. Undergoing a liposuction procedure will target the areas that need extra assistance in their reduction, giving you proper proportions and a refined silhouette.
- Clothing Fits Better: You may find that your clothing fits better and/or looser with your new sculpted physique, increasing your confidence even further. You will also be presented with the exciting opportunity to buy new clothes that fit you better.
Candidates
Candidacy for liposuction will vary according to a few different factors. Patients who respond best to the procedure are non-smokers, are in generally good health, and wish to address unwanted areas of diet and exercise-resistant fat. Because liposuction is not for weight loss, it is generally recommended for patients to be at or near their final goal weight to undergo a body sculpting procedure like liposuction. (1) Liposuction works best when the skin has sufficient elasticity and can contract naturally once the excess fat is removed. Adequate skin elasticity ensures smoother results without a sagging or loose appearance post-procedure.

Preparation
- Discontinue Medications and Supplements: We will provide thorough guidance regarding medications and supplements that need to be discontinued prior to surgery. Some medications and supplements can increase the risk of bleeding and interfere with anesthesia, so it’s important to adhere strictly to these recommendations.
- Avoid Nicotine and Alcohol: Smoking and alcohol consumption impact the body’s healing process and can increase the likelihood of complications. It is crucial to stop smoking and avoid alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
- Arrange Transportation and Support: Arrange for someone responsible to drive you home after the procedure, and consider having assistance at home during the initial stages of recovery.
- Eat a Healthy Diet and Stay Hydrated: Nourishing your body with a nutritious diet leading up to your surgery can foster optimal healing. Drink plenty of water and minimize the intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive sodium. By providing your body with essential nutrients, you can optimize healing and support the recovery process.
Procedure
Liposuction is typically performed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the extent of the treatment areas and your personal preferences. Local anesthesia is often used for smaller areas, while general anesthesia provides complete unconsciousness and pain relief during the procedure. Surgeons strategically place small incisions in inconspicuous locations near the treatment areas. The precise location and number of incisions depend on the specific technique chosen and the areas being targeted.
After making these incisions, your surgeon will insert a narrow tube, called a cannula, into the fatty deposits being targeted. They gently move the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells, which are then suctioned out with a specialized vacuum device or syringe. With VASER liposuction, specialized equipment is used to emulsify the fat tissue before it is removed. The removal of excess fat is performed meticulously to sculpt and define the desired contours. The surgical team takes utmost care to create smooth, natural results.
Recovery
Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate compression garments to wear following your liposuction procedure. These garments help control swelling, provide support to sagging skin, and aid in shaping the treated areas. It is essential to follow the instructions provided for optimal healing. Swelling and bruising are normal after liposuction and typically subside over time. Swelling generally peaks in the first few days and gradually diminishes over several weeks. Bruising may vary in intensity but will also fade gradually.
During the initial recovery period, it is essential to rest and minimize physical activity as advised by your surgeon. Engaging in light walking can promote circulation, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided until you are cleared to do so.
While individual recovery experiences may vary, most patients can expect to return to work or their daily routine within a week to 10 days following their procedure. It’s important to note that everyone heals differently, and it may take several weeks or months before you can fully appreciate the final results of your liposuction surgery. Maintaining a positive attitude, adhering to your post-operative instructions, and practicing patience are key during this period.
Results
Results will largely depend on the targeted areas and the scale of the procedure, but patients regularly report increased confidence and satisfaction with their new, sculpted body. Schedule a consultation to explore what results can await you.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men of all ages, resulting in the development of glandular tissue and excess fat in the chest area. Factors such as hormonal imbalances, genetics, aging, medication use, and certain health conditions can contribute to the development of gynecomastia. Many individuals with the condition feel self-conscious or are uncomfortable with the appearance of their chests, leading to a loss of confidence and quality of life. Gynecomastia treatment is a specialized surgical procedure aimed at addressing excess breast tissue in males, using liposuction and sometimes excision techniques to create a more masculine chest appearance.
