A thigh lift (thighplasty) is a body contouring treatment that reshapes the thighs by eliminating excess skin for a slender, curvier physique. Many women can attest to avoiding certain social situations and recreational activities, sometimes missing out on opportunities in life, simply because they feel that they cannot change that part of themselves. And, if a diet with exercise does not help, it is easy to give up. You may tell yourself ‘This is the way that it is,’ thinking there are no other options. Fortunately, with modern liposuction and body contouring techniques, there are other options.

About Thigh Lifts
A thigh lift removes excess skin on the inner and outer thighs, a tell-tale sign of weight changes and aging. In 2022, surgeons performed approximately 9,421 thigh lifts to help patients achieve smoother skin and more balanced proportions. (1) We can perform liposuction with a thigh lift to remove stubborn fat deposits for a smoother, leaner look. (2) Liposuction was one of the top 5 most popular procedures in 2021, and surgeons performed more than 491,000 treatments that year to remove excess skin. (3) Many patients have a thigh lift after weight loss to restore their figures so they can enjoy a beautiful, smoother contour. With a thigh lift, we can:
- Eliminate excess skin: A thigh lift eliminates droopy skin (ptosis) for a smoother, slimmer figure and increased mobility.
- Improve hygiene: We can eliminate deep folds in the skin that make it difficult to maintain good hygiene or feel comfortable in tight-fitting clothes.
- Balance your proportions: If excess skin is affecting your body proportions, the treatment can help you achieve a smoother and curvier silhouette.
Types of Thigh Lift
There are several different types of thigh lifts to help you meet your body goals, depending on the amount of excess tissue you would like to remove:
- Mini Thigh Lift: A mini thigh lift eliminates sagging skin in the upper and inner thighs with a small incision closer to the groin.
- Standard Thigh Lift: We can make an incision from the inside of the groin to the buttocks or a vertical incision from the groin to your knee for a moderate amount of excess skin.
- Crescent Thigh Lift: For moderate to severe ptosis, a crescent thigh lift enhances your curves with a discrete hip-to-hip incision along the back of the waist.
- Extended Thigh Lift: If you wish to remove a large amount of excess skin, we can eliminate it with an incision that extends from your buttocks to your groin.
Thigh Lift Benefits
A thigh lift can transform your body for a sleeker, slimmer contour that you can enjoy for many years. After a thigh lift, you can enjoy:
- Balanced body proportion
- Enhanced mobility
- Improved self-esteem
- Feeling more comfortable in clothing
- A more youthful appearance
- Smoother, more athletic thighs
- Emphasized curves
- Eliminated fat for a slimmer figure
Thigh Lift Candidates & Consultation
If you have excess skin that you would like to remove, you are likely a good candidate for a thigh lift. Your consultation will help you decide whether or not a thigh lift is right for you. At SSA, a board-certified surgeon will discuss your goals and possible options. Your SSA surgeon will ask about your body goals, current medications, and medical history to create the best treatment plan for your needs. Please come prepared to discuss your lifestyle and goals openly to help us determine the best treatment plan. The best candidates are close to their weight loss goals and are able to maintain a steady weight.
How to Prepare for a Thigh Lift
To prepare for a thigh lift, you will need to stop taking blood thinners 1-2 weeks before your appointment and stop smoking 4-6 weeks before. If you are currently part of a weight loss program, you will need to stop weight loss medication 3-4 weeks before your procedure. Please arrive at your appointment in comfortable clothing that you can easily remove.
We recommend that you prep your meals ahead of time so you can recover comfortably at home without trips to the store. You will also need to take 2-3 weeks off work and arrange for someone you trust to drive you home. They will need to monitor you for the first 24-48 hours.
Thigh Lift Procedure
Before your procedure, we will place you under anesthesia for your comfort. During the procedure, your SSA surgeon will make a thin, discrete incision on the inside of your thighs to remove excess skin. The incisions blend into your skin for a natural look. Your surgeon will lift the remaining skin for a slimmer leg contour. The type of incision your surgeon makes during the procedure will depend on your body goals. The procedure can take a few hours, depending on the amount of excess skin you would like to remove.
Thigh Lift Recovery
Although you will see the results of a thigh lift immediately, you can enjoy the full benefits a few weeks after your incisions heal. We will provide instructions on how to care for your incisions based on the type of thigh lift you had and whether or not you had corresponding procedures to help you achieve your body goals. You will need to take approximately 2 weeks off of work to allow your body to recover fully and we will schedule a follow-up appointment with your SSA surgeon to examine your progress.
Thigh Lift Results
After a thigh lift, you can enjoy smooth, lean legs for many years. Many patients find that it is easy to maintain their results with a regular diet and exercise. You can enjoy feeling more comfortable in your clothing and you will have a more youthful contour without excess, droopy skin that changes your body proportions.
Corresponding Procedures
Body Lift
If you recently lost weight and are struggling with excess skin in numerous areas, we can perform a body lift to help you get your old body back. A body lift removes excess skin on the abdomen, midsection, buttocks, thighs, or hips depending on the areas you would like to address. During the procedure, we can make a thin incision along your underwear lines to tighten your abdominal skin and remove excess tissue for a more youthful look.
Arm Lift
An arm lift eliminates excess skin for toned, athletic, more youthful arms. If you recently lost weight and wish to contour your arms as well as your legs, we can combine a thigh lift with an arm lift for a complete makeover. Excess arm skin is a common issue after weight changes, but an arm lift can eliminate it. See our blog to learn more about how we can transform your figure with our life-changing body treatments.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is a procedure that eliminates excess skin on the abdomen for a tighter, toned midsection that you can feel more confident about. We can combine a tummy tuck with liposuction to remove excess fat and help you achieve a more youthful silhouette in just a few hours. A tummy tuck puts the finishing touches on your weight loss journey to help you feel more comfortable in your skin.
